Fighting “Fake News”

https://youtu.be/jYRlrWidKTk

For my final project I felt it was important to discuss something we have talked a lot about in lecture, credibility, and how the media is seen and understood by the people around the country. I tried to highlight the way that since Trump has taken office, the idea of fake news has been portrayed in the media a lot more. The bias that Trump has towards Fox News has gotten to the point where he expressed how false other news sources are. People are being told by the leader of our country that the only accurate news source is one that believes in everything he does. This is not good. It takes away from people’s ability to express themselves fairly because the President of the United States turns them down and calls is fake news. With the news broadcasts I choose I wanted to show the way Trump and his cabinet do not fully support any news source other than Fox News. The part of the video at the end was used to show how often Trump discusses the idea of fake news.

As a comm student I hope one day to be able to talk and express my ideas to large groups of people. Reporters and journalists work hard to produce credible and new ideas and stories that challenge Trump’s ideas. America’s laws were put into place in order to allow challenge and to express different opinions, even those that go against the President of the United States. Trump’s ability to shut down people’s ideas makes him seem unable to change and not be a voice of the people only himself. I enjoyed being able to make kind of a motivation video telling people to not be afraid to speak up and continue to express their ideas even if Trump shuts them down.

I really liked the freedom we had with this project and it allowed us to talk about something we are passionate about. I was very new to Premier and struggled with it at first but felt like I figured it out. I was able to teach myself how to drag out clips and move the pieces to where I wanted them. I felt the flow of my piece was very effective and allowed me to express my opinion. The use of remixes in the media allow people to put together main ideas and portray a common issue within the media. Yes we hear about fake news but it is not known how much Trump really talks about fake news and expresses this idea. Common these are easier to see when put into a video and told like a story. This is a lot like reporting a news piece as it allows people to pull together different parts of a story. The credibility is also there as they are directly pulled from things people have said.

Trump needs to express why he feels certain ideas are wrong, but not just call it wrong because it does not come from Fox News. The bias is dangerous and takes away credibility from sources that are right and accurate.

DIY-EQUAL PAY FOR EQUAL PAY

My infographic was one that hits very close to home. The fight for women in the work force is not equal and never has been, while women have had to fight for the right to even step out on the soccer field let alone be paid for it. Women’s marches and many other protests have occurred in order to call attention to the wage gap. Women are practicing and participating in as many hours as men are on the fields and on the courts, so why are they not being paid equally for their hard work. The viewers and fans want to watch women’s soccer as there have been many records of viewers broken in soccer history, but the women struggle to advertise as they are not being funded with nearly as much money as the men are. I have practiced with the Seattle Reign for many summers before I came to college and the environment that these girls are put in is no where near as nice as it should be. The story I am telling with my infographic is that while there has been some progress there is still work that needs to be done in order to push this movement further. The facts I put on my infographic were ones that stuck out to me when I first saw them. They were the facts that made me think about the numbers and how women could easily bring in as many viewers and fans as men, but are limited by the amount of money they have to work with. The highest paid female, while still earning 18.1 million dollars, is still way under the highest paid male at 285 million. The women also earns 18 million in endorsements and outside of the sport jobs. These are things she has to work for outside of the sport itself. The prize money that women earn is by far less than men.

I used Canva to make my infographic and enjoyed the freedom it allowed while still guiding me in a general theme. It allowed me to add pictures that fit the main theme and idea of what I was trying to portray. I feel as though my infographic has just enough information to get the reader interested in the topic that they are viewing. Infographics are often found in places where people will see something that catches their eye and I feel as though it is organized and easy to read. I actually enjoyed working on this and understand the importance of taking bigger and more important topics and dumbing them down for the reader. If someone comes across a big long article about women’s rights and it simply states a lot of boring facts and big words, they are less likely to read it than if they were looking at something with pictures and eye catching statements. In today’s world people always want the quick and easy way out of things and I feel as though infographics allow for them to get to the point quickly and without thinking too much on their own.

Who am I to myself and the world?

WHO AM I?

My identity all throughout high school was the same. I was a straight, white female who fit in and had friends and was comfortable with who I was. I never really questioned who I was and where I fit in as in my high school I was friends with people who were just like me. I grew up in a predominately white area. The only part about myself I ever struggled with was that most of my friends were much wealthier than I was and I grew up around families that took vacations to Hawaii every spring break and ski trips in the winter. I was always the friend that went along with their families and there was nothing wrong with that but I wondered what it would be like to go with my own parents. Maybe the family bonding time would have helped my mom and I stop fighting or brought me closer to my brother who was so much older than I.

I have always felt older than my age as I have played up on soccer and basketball teams my whole life. I have had to deal with coaches and miss out on the high school parties that everyone talked about growing up. I had different goals in high school than those of my peers and this was both a blessing and a curse. It got me to where I am today, wearing a Trojan jersey and learning in one of the top schools in the world, but at the time I struggled with missing out.

WHO AM I ACCORDING TO THE MEDIA

Women in sports have always been at a disadvantage. They are viewed as too masculine or scary and this is something I have seen in my life. The stereotype of women athletes is reflected in the real world as they are judged for their appearance and their body types on social media. “Too big” “She’s huge” and other negative comments are seen all across women social media platforms. Women who do things that men do are often demonized and viewed as too masculine. This is something I see in my everyday life. Nike recently released a commercial that talks about how women in sports are viewed as crazy. It normalized the women’s emotions and showed the world that they are reacting the same way a man would if he lost the U.S. open or got cheated of a Super Bowl victory. It explained how at the end of the day passion is passion and the commercial ended with “Show Them What Crazy Can Do”

The representation of strong women in television and the media is also improving thanks to people like director, Shonda Rhimes and her representation of strong women in her television shows. If people begin to see women in the workforce are behaving the way only men are supposed to, then this will normalize strong women. Rhimes has discussed how only women have the title of a “strong female lead” while if a man is a lead then he is already viewed as “strong.” Rhimes hopes to normalize this in television. We have a long way to go, but we have to start somewhere.

Shonda Rhimes’ How to Get Away With Murder

Kim K. doing a photoshoot on a polluted beach was an image I found import to display. I believe that the Kardashians do not use their money for the right reasons and a lot of the times end up promoting the wrong ideas and thoughts into the media. Take Kendall Jenner’s Pepsi ad, where she solved police brutality with a can of Pepsi. The Kardashians and many other people that we view as important are not the people we should support. There are so many different things going on in our world and we choose to care about what lipstick Kim is wearing. The idea that I tried to portray in my image manipulation was that the beach is polluted and covered in trash, but all Kim cares about is what she looks like and what people think about her. Today people often get caught up in their appearance and how much money they have, while the Earth is being polluted there are still starving people all over the world. There are much larger things to focus on but instead people find it easier to turn on their televisions and watch the Kardashians.

The SMELL Test-Does Donald Stink?

Article: President Trump Directed His Attorney Michael Cohen To Lie To Congress About The Moscow Tower Project.

Author: Anthony Cormier and Jason Leopold of Buzzfeed News

Source? Buzzfeed News. Buzzfeed has a reputation for being very out there with their articles. They also have a strong bias and lean extremely to the left.

THE PIE CHART:

PROXIMITY-Medium, INDEPENDENCE-Medium, Expertise-Medium

When I did the PIE chart for the article it became clear that it was very much clear that the article has some truth to it, but is very opinionated and the authors are very one sided in their arguments.

Motivation? To inform it’s readers of Donald Trump and his connections with Russia. The author proves that Trump has lied on occasions about relationships with Russia.

Evidence? The author provides multiple cases where members of Trump’s cabinet have lied about negotiations with Russia.

“But Cohen’s testimony marks a significant new frontier: It is the first known example of Trump explicitly telling a subordinate to lie directly about his own dealings with Russia.”

Michael Cohen had lied in his Congressional testimony and this created a shaky trust between the country and it’s president.

Logic? The facts in the article do match with the claims as the article does not much more than simply describe events that have occurred and the reactions of the public to those actions. There is evidence, but it is not strong evidence and the article does a large amount of inferring.

Left out? Well, the obvious is left out of the article. Trump telling the truth. There is no actual proof that Trump had direct ties with Russia as he has and will continue to deny working with them.

SO. Does this article smell? No not literally, but it is a little fishy in it’s facts and claims. The article is more opinion based with little facts. The authors are also creating opinions based on events that happen.

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO BE ASKED WHILE READING

1)What is the purpose? Well the author is trying to explain the mistrust between the people and Donald Trump…well this is tough as not all people feel this way. The author has been known to write articles and come forward with ideas that are bias. If someone is going to write an article to achieve this goal, it will most likely be a stretch of the truth.

2)What creative techniques are used to attract and hold audience attention? The author does a nice job of telling more of a story in the article. It is not necessarily just facts, but keeps the reader engaged through a story. The author also uses a lot of names which leads the reader to believe the story.

3)How might different people interpret this message differently? Well people that agree with the author and feel as though Trump has been dishonest will like the article. Those who like and agree with Trump and support him will find the flaws in the article. There are also those who know about the SMELL test and know to background check the article and the author first;).

4)What lifestyles, values, and points of view are presented? The points of view that are presented are those observing the events and actions that are going on in Trumps cabinet. They are critical due to their political beliefs and this can lead to a very bias view. The values and lifestyles that are presented are of those in politics and when the author is not in that field it can be unclear if his facts are 100 percent accurate.

5) What is omitted? An actual statement from Donald Trump explaining exactly what was going on between The United States and Russia

OVERALL, the article was interesting to read but still filled with facts that were stretched a little too far. This article is not one I would view as factual, but more opinionated. Now does Trump Smell? I’m not sure we would have to ask Melania, but I know this article is a little bit smelly and could use some work to pass the smell test.

MEDIA CONSUMPTION

I enjoy documentaries on Netflix and I find them to be very informational. I spend a lot of time watching different documentaries on sports teams and different people in the world. I enjoy learning new things with visuals. I get a large amount of my news and information from twitter and different social media websites where people I know are discussing their thoughts and ideas on things happening in our world. Twitter and Instagram have become a large part of my daily life and I check them multiple times a day. I spend at least an hour each day on some social media platform. I constantly have my phone in my hand and it does not always allow me to live in the moment. It is almost as if I feel I am missing out if I don’t have my phone on me. I am always switching from instagram to twitter and all different types of social media.

I do not use any social media that costs money. I think people can easily be sucked into spending money on things they do not need. With social media people are constantly wanting what other people have. When you are only shown the best of what people have you begin to feel unrealistic expectations for yourself and your life. You end up buying the newest trends and the latest fashion, but for what? A new post? Consumer culture is greatly affected by social media. I feel that a am not completely wrapped into consumer culture, but if I see something cute or a new outfit I might end up buying it, we have all dealt with this before. I am also very careful about who I talk to and who I make interactions with online. The internet can be used for good and can also be harmful. Just like everything in life it must be used in moderation. Below I have inserted a time log of my social media use throughout the day.
